A couple of weeks ago I posted a blog called ‘Social Network: Snog, Marry, Avoid?‘ in which I highlighted some of the potential pro’s and con’s that become apparent when a social network is used to promote a business. I thought it might be valuable to revisit some of the concepts addressed in that article in more detail; specifically Twitter and its value as an Inbound Marketing tool.

As someone who admittedly isn’t the most business savvy person in the world, Inbound Marketing does sound dangerously like corporate jargon – but it really is quite a simple concept. It is the practice of reaching out to potential business clients, or market leaders through a number of methods, including producing high quality content. This is the opposite of Outbound Marketing (or push marketing), which is focused on pushing people towards a business through techniques such as cold-calling.

Analogy time…

Imagine there are two people on the highest diving board at a swimming pool, but they don’t want to jump into the water. They are then approached by two marketers, one who practices outbound marketing techniques and the other uses inbound marketing strategies – but they both only get paid when the person jumps in the water.

The Outbound Marketer would maybe just approach the person from behind and give them a shove over the edge. It might be quick, executed using a tried-and-tested method, and the marketer will get paid, but there will have been almost no trust established between the marketer and the unwilling diver – the chances of them going back to the top of the diving board are minimal at best.

A report by regulations giant Ofcom has shown that a third of UK adults now use a smartphone. The most popular handset is the Apple iPhone, however according to the report is seems teenagers prefer RIM’s Blackberry handsets.
A key factor noted in the report was that due to the increased amount of people using smartphones, mobile internet use had risen dramatically. The most visited site was Facebook, with 43 million hours being spent logged into it during one month (December 2010).
Another stat from the report claimed that only 42% of adult females owned a smartphone compared to 58% of males, however amongst teenagers the stats changed radically with only 48% of boys owning a smartphone compared to 52% of girls.
The report also looked at overall uses of the internet, it based it’s analysis on a cross-section of 2481 adults who use broadband services.
The most popular tasks were e-mail (89%), online banking (61%) and television (45%).
Not surprisingly, younger people were found to less worried about online privacy, between 16-24 year olds, only 6% had concerns. However, amongst older users (55 to 64 year olds) the figure more than doubled to 13%.

This entry was posted on Thursday, August 4th, 2011 at 9:44 am.
